Design, simulate and run in the browser

AIRXLAB is a first-person 3D maker lab. Walk the hall, sit at one of five benches and use a real engineering tool: circuits, boards, enclosures, simulation and parts. Nothing to install, and the files you finish with are files a fabricator accepts.

Inside the lab

Five benches, one hall

Press E at a bench to sit down and work. Each one is a real tool, and each hands its result to the next: the breadboard becomes a board, the board gets an enclosure.

The hall. Electronics Forge, PCB Atelier, Design Studio, Simulation Arena and Fabrication Bay line the back wall.
Electronics Forge: an Arduino Nano and parts on a breadboard, with analysis, firmware and sketch panels
Electronics Forge. Breadboard circuits. Sketches compile with real avr-gcc and run on an emulated ATmega328P; overdriven parts burn.
PCB Atelier: the breadboard circuit as a green board with routed copper tracks
PCB Atelier. The same circuit as a board. Copper follows your wiring, the board cuts to size, and it exports Gerbers.
Design Studio: a solid box on an isometric grid with modelling tools and measurements
Design Studio. Solid CAD with sketches, holes and extrude. Builds the enclosure around your board; exports STL, STEP and URDF.

The engineering, live

Three small demonstrations that compute in this page: a driven dimension, an RC step response and a range scan. The lab itself is above.

  1. 01

    Solid CAD

Sketch with constraints, extrude, cut holes and join an assembly. Drag the driving span here and the geometry and mass follow.

  2. 02

    Circuits that obey physics

The lab solves the circuit by nodal analysis, and a part driven past its absolute maximum dies and stays dead. Here: an RC step response, with the rise time measured off the curve.

  3. 03

    Sensors and returns

A range sensor sweeping a room and writing its returns, the kind of reading the lab's ultrasonic and IR parts produce.

Honestly assessed

Who this is for

Good fit

You will get value on day one

  • Students without a licence budget
  • Educators who need thirty seats without thirty installs
  • Teams prototyping where CAD, circuit and code all move together
  • Anyone who wants to test a control change before cutting metal
Poor fit

Use something else

  • Production-grade FEA or CFD. This is not that tool.
  • Large assemblies in the thousands of parts
  • Regulated workflows needing a validated toolchain
  • Offline work with no connection at all

Saying this plainly saves you a wasted afternoon.

Questions

Common questions

What is AIRXLAB?

AIRXLAB is a first-person 3D maker lab that runs in the browser. You walk a hall and sit at one of five benches: Electronics Forge, PCB Atelier, Design Studio, Simulation Arena and Fabrication Bay. Each bench is a working engineering tool.

Do I need to install anything to use the Lab?

No. The Lab runs in the browser, so there is nothing to install. It does need an internet connection, because projects are saved on the server.

What files can I export from the Lab?

The PCB Atelier exports Gerbers. The Design Studio exports STL, STEP and URDF files. These are formats a fabricator accepts.

Can I run Arduino sketches in the Lab?

Yes. Sketches in the Electronics Forge compile with avr-gcc and run on an emulated ATmega328P. The circuit is solved by nodal analysis, and a part driven past its absolute maximum burns out.

Which browsers and computers does the Lab need?

Use a current version of Chrome, Edge or Firefox, or one version back, with WebGL 2. Integrated graphics are fine for CAD and circuit work, and 8 GB of memory is recommended for assemblies above 200 parts. A mouse or trackpad works, and a three-button mouse helps in CAD.

Can I use the Lab for production-grade FEA or CFD?

No. The Lab is not a production-grade FEA or CFD tool. It is also a poor fit for assemblies of thousands of parts, regulated workflows that need a validated toolchain, and offline work.

Who is the Lab for?

It suits students without a licence budget, educators who need many seats without installing software on each machine, and teams that want CAD, circuit and code to move together. It also suits anyone who wants to test a control change before cutting metal.

Can a board I design in the Lab be fabricated by Airoot?

Yes. The board you lay out in the Lab is the board that reaches Airoot's fabrication queue, with no vendor in between.
